Diversity's Critical Role in AI and Innovation
We were delighted to be joined by over 100 Women in AI at the end of November for the first instalment of our Women in AI virtual evenings. The evening of virtual networking, discussion and keynote presentations, supported by TD Bank, covered topics including'Diversity's Critical Role in AI and Innovation', Action Recognition for Behaviour Understanding from Video in 2020 and more. Speakers included Jane Ho, Associate VP, Data & Analytics at TD Bank, Ashley Cohen, Principal Analytical Lead of Google, Tanmana Sadhu, Computer Vision Engineer at Huawei Canada, Inmar Givoni, Director of Engineering of Uber ATG, Sedef Akinli Kocak, Senior Lecturer at Ryerson University and Hakimeh Purmehdi, Senior Data Scientist at Ericsson. A summary of highlights is below, including a video recording of the panel discussion. Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning models are heavily reliant on the data that feed them. While AI can improve human decision making; however, since data can be biased based on human decisions made in the past, AI output may inherit or even amplify biases.

Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak On Technology, AI and Innovation in Banking
While optimistic about the future, Steve Wozniak is not ready to turn over his identity (nor his Tesla) to artificial intelligence anytime soon. At a conference in Budapest I attended, he referenced deleting his Facebook account because of privacy concerns, and that he no longer believes that a totally autonomous car will happen in his lifetime. But Wozniak retains the passion and enthusiasm for technology and innovation that made him a household name as Apple's co-founder. When he and Steve Jobs started Apple, they were trying to develop a new kind of computer that would improve the user experience beyond what was available at the time. Today, "The Woz" is a brilliant engineer, who keeps his eye on what is happening in technology, digital transformation and entrepreneurship.

Connecting the Dots in the New White House Report on AI and Innovation - Innovation 360 Group AB
In October, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and the U.S. president issued a joint report titled "Preparing For The Future of Artificial Intelligence." If you were waiting for a sign to prove that the Fourth Industrial Revolution had begun, a policy statement from the White House on thinking robots definitively fits the bill. The report consists of a state of AI summary and lays out potential applications. It then delves into questions everyone has about what AI will do to society and public policy. It concludes with a strategic plan for federally-funded R&D for practical AI, based on actual request-for-information (RFI) proposals.
